Janāzah

The video performance 'Janazah’ Based on an encounter with a mother in the Bosnian countryside, who recounted the killing of her son in her potato field during the war. As she told this story she prepared a traditional pie, with potatoes from the very place the boy had fallen. The preparation took long. She mixed old fashioned Turkish and Bosnian love words, infinitely tender, as she spoke of him, while she peeled and washed and cut the potatoes. 'Corner of my liver'. 'Soul of my soul'. It felt like he was in the room with us. Peeled, washed, cut. Giving fruit again and again, feeding the living, from the depth of this earth that had soaked up his blood.
When the pie was ready, she put in front of us, fresh and hot from the oven. It felt like a sacrament. The woman had turned the food into flesh again, in an act of transsubstantiation operated by storytelling. 'Janazah' is the name of the Muslim prayer for the dead. This video is the ritual washing before prayer, performed in real time with earth instead of water. The call to prayer is replaced by a traditional Bosnian love song, layered like the sound of multiple minarets calling in the distance.
